About Shipping Containers
A shipping container is a robust container designed to endure the rigors of shipment, storage, and handling. Typically constructed from steel, these containers are built to withstand extreme weather conditions and support heavy loads. In international trade, the term "shipping container" is synonymous with "intermodal freight container" (often referred to as a "sea can"), a versatile container that allows for seamless transfer between different modes of transport without the need to unload and reload the cargo. Remarkably, container shipping is the backbone of global trade, with approximately 90% of all goods transported by sea.
Components of a Shipping Container
Every shipping container is engineered with key components that ensure its durability and functionality:
Corner Castings
Reinforced corner posts known as corner castings feature openings for twist lock connections, enabling secure attachment to other containers or anchor points. They are designed to withstand crane rigging even when fully loaded.
Twist Locks
Twist locks are used to securely connect containers to anchor points or other containers. The end piece fits into the corner casting and locks into place via a pivot mechanism, usually activated by a lever.
Cross Members
Cross members are beams that support the container's floor, creating a gap between the ground and the flooring to prevent moisture ingress. This design also reduces the need for foundations in some structures, such as ground-level offices.
Forklift Pockets
Standard 20-foot and many 40-foot containers feature forklift pockets—reinforced slots that accommodate forklift tines for easy lifting and moving. Note that some modifications may impact the container's ability to be lifted by forklift.
Cargo Doors
Cargo doors, typically located at one end of the container, are designed to prevent theft and weather intrusion. Some containers feature cargo doors on both ends or on the side walls for enhanced access and security.
CSC Plate
The CSC plate certifies that the container meets The International Convention for Safe Containers (CSC) standards. This certification ensures the container is safe for stacking and handling, preventing potential structural failures.
Falcon Plate
Similar to the CSC plate, the Falcon plate indicates that a container has met Falcon Structures' specific standards for quality and safety. This certification applies to modified containers produced by Falcon Structures.
Marine-Grade Plywood Flooring
Many containers feature marine-grade plywood flooring, treated with insecticide to deter pests. This flooring is durable and safe, ensuring that the container's interior remains clean and free from contamination.
Bamboo Flooring
Bamboo flooring is becoming more common due to its durability, mildew resistance, and sustainability. Bamboo is a renewable resource and provides an aesthetically pleasing option, particularly for containers converted into living spaces.
